Kempegowda International Airport Bangalore is the main airport serving Bengaluru city in India. It is named after Kempegowda I, the founder of Bangalore. The airport opened in May 2008. It is one of the busiest airports in India.
The airport is 40 kilometres north of Bangalore city centre. You can reach the airport by road using National Highway 44. A dedicated airport shuttle bus runs every 30 minutes from Kempegowda Bus Station. Taxi and ride-share services are also available 24 hours a day.
Kempegowda Airport Bangalore has two passenger terminals.
The airport can handle 40 million passengers per year. In 2023–24, it served over 35 million passengers. It plans to expand capacity to 80 million by 2030.
There are two runways, each 4 kilometres long. They can handle large wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380. The cargo terminal handles 300,000 tonnes of freight every year.
Over 30 airlines operate from the airport. Domestic carriers include IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet. International airlines include Emirates, Qatar Airways and British Airways. The airport connects to more than 70 destinations worldwide.
The airport has modern facilities for passengers:
A new metro line is under construction. It will link the city centre to the airport in 30 minutes. The line is expected to open in 2026.
Short-term and long-term parking is available on-site. There are over 5,000 parking spaces. Major car rental companies like Hertz, Avis & Zoomcar have counters in the arrival halls.
Security checks follow International Civil Aviation Organization norms. Passengers must arrive at least two hours before departure. The airport has fire stations, emergency medical teams and disaster response plans on site.
Kempegowda Airport won the “Best Regional Airport” award in Asia in 2023. It also ranks high in passenger satisfaction surveys for clean terminals and friendly staff.
The airport uses solar power for 60 per cent of its energy needs. Rainwater harvesting systems collect over 1 million litres of water each year. Landscaping uses native plants to reduce water use.
Kempegowda International Airport Bangalore is a modern, busy and well-planned airport. It offers smooth travel for millions of passengers every year. With new expansions and a metro link coming, it will become even more accessible and efficient soon.
